    Low compression repair options

Yep! They are all within 5 psi of each-other. I'll try that ATF trick. How long would you run it before draining the ATF back out?

    Low compression repair options

A quick follow up on this post... Suspecting that the engine ran better than it should for being so low on compression, I borrowed another compression tester to compare readings. The harbor freight tester was showing me about 90 psi, while another better quality unit was showing me 125! I'm...

    Low compression repair options

That's how i did it, but it's definitely worth a try Seans way before a teardown!

    Low compression repair options

I did, but i didn't prop the slides open as Sean suggested. That's next!

    Low compression repair options

Good point, I'll test it out on another engine. It fires up fast, and seems to run strong. No smoke, etc.

If that pesky budget issue wasn't always a factor, i'd already be waiting that check!

    Low compression repair options

That's a great point that i overlooked! If i get a bump by putting oil in the cyls, wouldn't that indicate a ring issue? 115 with a shot of oil seems low, even without propping the slides open.

    Low compression repair options

Thanks for your input everyone! I did have the throttle wide open when I was testing, and all the cylinders were even at 90. I could do a leak down to verify what's going on, but with a couple squirts of oil in the cylinders, the compression jumped up to about 115, which if I remember right...

    Low compression repair options

The only problem that I can see with this forum, is that it is so robust that it can sometimes be hard to find an answer to a specific question! I have an '85 that I am slowly upgrading for 50/50 drag and street use. (By the way, I live in Denver at 5800ft) I've got the HD Clutch mod, Morleys...

    1st Gen V-Max 1985 Vmax Cafe/Drag Build

Thanks! I might have the original rear fender left, but most everything else has been sold off. I've always loved that paint scheme, so when I got the bike, I knew I had to do it! Good luck on your Gen 1 build. Looking forward to progress pics. Bob

Drunk or not, it had to take some major stones to flat track that bike! Very nice job on your newest one also. Love the flat Black on the scoops! Looks like you've got a voodoo pipe on it too?I grew up watching Kenny Roberts Jay Springsteen and those guys with their iron shoes blast around flat...

    1st Gen V-Max 1985 Vmax Cafe/Drag Build

You hit the nail on the head as far as the paint job! Kenny Roberts was one of my racing heroes growing up, and I always thought the yellow Yamaha's black paint scheme was the coolest! Kenny Roberts was a great racer back in the day when you had to do flat track and road racing to be a true...

    1st Gen V-Max 1985 Vmax Cafe/Drag Build

I would love to convert to chain drive! I'm assuming that gains in ET would be more through the availability of taller gearing choices rather than parasitic drag from the shaft system? I'm sensing that either way I need to open up my wallet :-)

    1st Gen V-Max 1985 Vmax Cafe/Drag Build

Bought this bike a few months ago and I'm in the process of converting it to a drag bike. So far, performance mods include a Morley muscle jet kit, VooDoo header, and auto meter shift light, and a PCW racing clutch. The rest is cosmetic for now, but the project is just beginning!

Clutch "pumps up" and begins to slip when hot only.

Another good point to remember! All of my levers are stock, but that didn't stop me from considering either drilling out the pocket, or shortening the rod. Now that I found the cure, I'm glad I didn't resort to that!

Clutch "pumps up" and begins to slip when hot only.

Another great point to remember! I replaced the stock bars with a set of flat drag bars, which puts the master cyl. at a slightly different angle. I'll have to think-through the fluid levels to make sure I'm not over, or under-full. The devil is in the details.... Redcardbob

Clutch "pumps up" and begins to slip when hot only.

CURE UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your help! Turns out that the simplest cure was the right one. The return hole was partially plugged. I used a safety pin to open it up, but apparently it was too big to go through. Thinking i had checked that off the diagnostic list, I then began to hit my...

Thanks for the info Sean! I did back off on the fluid level a bit.
