Thanks, I did a lot of reading up yesterday...I don't push that bike hard at all. I mean, it's so blistering fast after the Harley I traded for it, I'm still amazed it hasn't left me aside the road either...abusing that machine would be like stepping on an angel's toes. I don't ride that hard...

Yay! Ya'll about tired of me saying thanks? Too bad, I really appreciated the help and I'd still be scratching my head over it if ya'll hadn't taken the time to walk me through it. BTW, is there anything to the thing where you clean the starter? And...how hard is it to fix that o-ring in...

The rollers and caps look fine, no damage to them at all, just the galling the photos. I can't find one single mark in them. The galling on the first idler gear shaft in the cover is worse than this. When I turned the flywheel over, there's the starter clutch, right? I could not access the...

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

OK I did that. It just spins. Sounds like when you test a starter motor that's not on the bike, just spins. I dunno....
  9. coffee_brake

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

Maybe it screwed up the starter itself? The splines I can see look perfectly normal like any other starter to me....

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

I honestly don't see that much damage. No chips or cracks, just some marring and very shallow galling. But what do I know? Here's pics.

YEEEEEHAWWWWW!!!! Got it! Thank you Thank you Thank you everybody, I've never done that before and I needed all the help I could get. The bike was in gear, spinning the freaking rear tire. I put the rod back through the "spokes" to hold it. I'm only bleeding in about five places but the...

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

Well yeah, I guess I can. It's not on the CS obviously, but the front is tied down.... OK, back at it....thanks.

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

I absolutely cannot stop the flywheel from turning any kind of way. I cannot get the bike in gear as it sits on the lift. No way, no how. It won't come out of neutral. I have ratched down the rear brake as hard as it can be ratcheted, the motor still turns. I don't have any other way to...

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

OK I hear what you all are saying, THANKS very much for much-needed advice! One thing I noticed: If the puller is flat side out, as we discussed earlier, there are only a couple of threads on the bolts available to go into the flywheel. It was difficult to keep the puller level to the...

I didn't lube the bolt, I lubed the contact point between the pointy thing that goes into the end of the shaft. Duh, was I supposed to lube the bolt? Or was I supposed to buy a grade-8 bolt?
  16. coffee_brake

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

Well if I have to, I have to... Was the center bolt of the puller supposed to be grade 8 too? I did not get a new center bolt. I only got the three smaller ones that go into the flywheel threads. The puller threads are OK, I just stripped out the big middle bolt. Crap crap crap crap crap..

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

I just stripped the big center bolt on the rented puller. :bang head: Sean I checked out the Crastman puller, it didn't look any stronger than the rented one. Looked just like it. Yours in the video looks different. Here's a picture of the one I have. It looks very similar to the harmonic...

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

This is bonkers. I've got the best grade 8 bolts I can buy. I'm holding the motor still by sticking a wrench in between the new bolts so that it comes around against the engine guard. Is that OK? It's not pulling the bolts sideways is it? I've got so much torque on this thing I'm scared to...
  19. coffee_brake

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

OK then I'm not the only one who feels like they're putting too much force on it...good. I'm getting the bolts tomorrow, and now I have a nice shiny stainless clutch line to look at while I turn and turn and turn the puller bolt....
  20. coffee_brake

    Starter went "Kablooey!"

Well....no, the threads were left behind in the flywheel. It was a tense 5 minutes to oh-so-carefully grab the bit sticking out with channel-lock pliers and oh-so-slowly grip and turn....it did come on out and the threads in the flywheel are undamaged. No harm, no foul, just a sore knuckle...
