Looks like the left one has one, the right isn't very distinct, it kinda looks like something's in there with a similar i.d.

The lower carbs aren't visible, perhaps he can get a better pic of the ports by the brass plugs for the fuel system.

I just spoke to him again and he fitted the carbs on another vmax today and it ran perfectly

To me it seems like it’s fuel but I’m wondering if it is the coils?

I would start with 3 things,
1. compression test
2. measure coil resistance with a meter, check you have the correct coil lead to the correct cylinders
3. If coils pass test, visually check for spark with a plug.
 
It could be, weren't the front coil secondary wires crossed when in the correct position? I'd swap the fuel filter as cheap fix first to eliminate it.

Yes. Left wire pair was for the right front cyl. (#4)

Right wire pair was for the left front cyl. (#2)
