Also, put a multimeter across the battery terminals while it's not running and check the voltage. should be over 12.
Running, it should be at 14 and revved to 2500 it should be 15 volts.
I've owned two and both had bad stators. The charging system IMHO is minimal at best. Buy a top quality trickle charger and put it on as soon as you get home and leave it hooked up until you leave again even if your bike shows good charging. Also, some guy in europe makes a wire that you can very quickly install in the headlight and then the headlight will not go on when you start the bike. These are cheap and I'd get on on order right now.
