1988 Vmax bare wires at I believe stator. Any suggestions or should I start looking for a stator.

Trying to fix this is going to be difficult I think working with the wires you have. You might have better luck swapping on a new stator, and you can get one with better wattage from several suppliers.

You could disassemble things, clean it with acetone, and try some paint-on coating that provides flexible insulation. Let it dry well.

I don't know that cutting the wire and slipping on some marine shrink-wrap tubing and then soldering the wires would work, that might be the "I have no $!" attempt. A rigid solder joint may be more-prone to break at the solder joint to flexible wires.

Not a big deal! Get your pin tool, de-pin the wires from the plug.
Remove the stator cover.
Pull the three wires out of the grommet an inch or two.
Cut some heat shrink rubber oversize to cover the exposed wire, heat it to a good tight fit.
Work each of the wires back into the grommet with a touch of Permatex Black.
Re-pin each wire back to the plug (orientation doesnt matter). Plug it up and get ready for the next little curve the Max can throw at you.

OK, next problem with the money pit. When I removed generator case from engine I noticed only 2 bolts holding stator on to case. Looks like I need a tap. Looks like m6 or m8.
