If you don't drain it prior to removing it no worries, it'll drain out once you pull the cover. 
Sorry man, just kidding, yes, when I replaced my left and right side cover gaskets, I drained the oil and would advocate you doing so as well. I know you could figure out a way to prop it up on the right side somehow, but I wouldn't do it on my bike.
