Pot metal?

What kind of metal are the flat sides of the carbs made out of? I'm assuming that like most die cast pieces, they're some form of pot metal. Of course, I cleaned one of mine very abrasively, removing any coating that might have been on there. It looked great for about 30 minutes, and now it looks like shite again.

It's aluminum with a coating. As you noticed the coating is stripped if you get too aggressive (and what causes it to turn white or milky with the wrong or too strong a cleaner). I think it was maybe a zinc chromate coating.
