Racecars sounding like no others

I've watched a few of the races and unless they get some more talent in the driver seats it's going to have a tough time competing with the current open wheel series here in the US and world. Maybe the time is right but the cars will need more development which they will eventually get I'm guessing.
Having followed Formula One since the early 80's it has taken a step back, IMO, when they went with v-6's, as the visceral feel is lacking without the deafening roar of V-10/ 12's catapulting the fastest race cars around the worlds best twisty tracks.

We used to go to Watkins Glenn in the late 60's early 70's for the F1 races there. Redbone is correct, much different now. The whole race attitude seems to have changed also. At Watkins you could walk through the pits and talk to the drivers and crew as they were working on the cars. Sometimes the drivers would be napping on a cot next to the cars. I met (as a kid) so many now legendary drivers such as Graham Hill, John Surtees, Jackie Stewart and witnessed Stewart's teammate killed in a crash (don't remember his name or the year). All class gentlemen and all took the time to stop and talk to a kid. There was one race that Graham Hill ran out of fuel and rolled to a stop in front of us, (the only thing between us and the track was about 10' of grass and a low fence), got out, shrugged his shoulders, and said "Outta gas". Awesome memories.

I started going to Watliks Glen for Formula 1 in 1964, I have many beautiful shots of the racers, cars, and the track. Most of them are dead now. I did get Sir Stirling Moss's autograph on my race ticket stub, and still have it. What a great time of year and what a great place to watch the drivers and cars! I've been to F1 races in the USA, Canada & Europe. Truly only a handful of drivers can compete at this level.

I can see these cars turning better times for sprints than the gas-powered cars, but it looks like a long time before they will have the duration to run a F1 length race. Maybe their 'pit stop' will be a battery pack change-out, and back into the thick of things.

I'm a Glen veteran from 1968 to 1980 - USGP and CanAm race weekends.

My ex and I got some great pictures of drivers, and celebrities (there was a Toyota Celebrity Race a few years, where they drove race modified Celicas..)

Best shots from the era were Niki Lauda (after the crash - poor guy was scarred horribly), James Hunt, Mario (he was working on his sons kart - they had superkart racing there once or twice), Paul Newman, and George Harrison as a spectator. I got to say a few words to him, which was REALLY cool, and my ex got a shot of George and I smiling at the camera. She died of a brain tumor about 22 years ago, and the pictures are lost, sadly..

I just love electric cars, I have been beyond excited to see what Tesla has been doing with the Model S and some other entry level stuff around the corner. I aspire to own an electric car as a daily driver and have solar panels to juice it up. I may even go beyond that and refer to Elon Musk as an entrepreneurial hero.

I hope these elec race breeds at least net some usable tech for street cars, this is beyond fantastic as battery tech marches forward. In the meantime the following is the greatest sound in the world on a race car! I have always had a soft spot for these things but the Rotary just takes it that extra distance for me. If this does not give you a chubby then your a robot.

That's a shriek for sure! The rotarys are so smooth. I recall the rotary pickups Mazda made in the 1970's.

They were raced by On Any Sunday's Malcom Smith!

I sure haven't seen to many of those on the road in the last 20 years, but I notice when I do. Ive seen one running around rapid here but I don't think it actually has a rotary in it anymore. I keep thinking about doing another turbo rotary Beetle or Baja, so much performance in such a compact package. Man those things are fun and they sound like nothing else on the road.

An interesting fact that will more than likely keep the turbocharged V-6's around is that they use 30% less fuel than the previous F1 race cars. While it is true these days that more fuel efficiency is paramount in the consumers world hasn't Formula One always been a world of ultimate performance and the brave men that drive them? 5 years ago the drivers had their racing machines going faster than what they do now, and the sound of the cars screaming past the start/ finish line to me is missing somewhat. Bob Varsha telling you at the start of the race to turn up the volume is a bygone era as well. I lament but in time all things change but I still love to watch the races between the Professor Alain Prost battling Ayrton Senna will live on as when F1 was the greatest for me.

It's a sad day when we don't get the 12 cyl at full scream. Now, I have not been following so I don't fully understand why they went to V6, is it because the race teams just don't have gas money after buying cigs, beer and making a partial payment on a payday loan, or is this a PC move like keep the planet green? Is this like the restrictor plates in NASCAR, like a driver safety thing?

IMHO this would be like putting a 650cc limit on all Isle of Mann TT racing.
