I don't think my relay is stock. I am wondering about the 2 wires going to the plug one is blue/white the other on pictures I have found looks to be red/white. The wiring diagram shows only the blue/white wire where does the other one go.

The relay I have has 2 wires one goes to battery ground and the other is spliced into blue/white. Does this sound right??? It's an 86 max

Sounds stock to me. For early models, turn signal relay and starter cutoff relay are in the same housing. That blue/white wire goes from the cutoff relay to the starter button.
 
You can convert either one to work on the other but it's a lot easier to just get the correct year one. I have a few of each I think still.

yup it's right! Oh, on ebay the vmax solenoids are expensive, look for a royal venture one. They're the same pretty much.
