Texas had the good graces to legalize Auto Knives-Switchblades, for carry last September.
Same rules apply as other carry knives in Texas, Max blade 5", no daggers (generally meaning can't have a "two edged" blade).
No rules on concealment or carry method.

Anyone have opinions on Benchmade versus others?

In particular I am looking at the 8600 BK Bedlam. Its a big giant Auto, probably the biggest one out there.

I like Substantial knives, I currently carry a 12oz, S&W CK43, a big folder that is no doubt a "budget" knife but the favorite knife I've ever had cause its freaking indestructible.

Knives have piqued my interest last few years since I work in Ca. so much and handguns are big trouble out there. Its a "may issue" state and they almost don't, especially to non-natives. You have to convince a LEO you have legitimate need.

S&W does make a strong folding knife Rusty. I like them for the price. They come honed like a razor. Mine has serrations on the first two inches. Perfect if you ever need to cut through a seat belt or similar in an emergency. In Ma. auto-open is a no-no. And length is shorter. But, with the thumb piece on them they can open fast after break in, and with one hand. They clip to your outer pocket and you can barley feel them.

I carry the same Benchmade for close to twenty years now that was a gift from my department.
It's a folder with thumb knob, Kraton grips. Serrated and smooth blade. Heavy and good steel. Sharpened professionally countless times. Over the years I've missed placed it but never lost it which is a miracle for me.

Check this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUs08W2wLwY - the guy is hitting ribs and overall very happy with the knife. The knife has a tendency sliding between bones, but on one occasion it break the bone. But this is a fighting knife. I am carrying Benchmade McHenryAndWilliams, good knife, made in USA, but i don't use it very much:(

Cool. I have no idea what he's saying but it sounds cool in that language. I'm pretty sure my wife ordered me one for Christmas.
I ordered a Benchmade fixed blade "Nimravus" in case she fell through on me. Will spring it on her in a few months as a new purchase...haha....

I played with a Benchmade auto otf a couple years ago in the knife store when I became interested in the microtechs. But I never like the "loose" feel of the blade that is inherent in any otf knife. I also like a solid feel to my knives. The knives that I have been impressed with are the spyderco knives. I didn't like the look at first, but they are very solid blades, and have been good to me. If you want an expensive knife, check out the line from Extrema Ratio. They have a couple distributors here in the US. I bought the Glauca B1 from http://www.xtremeknives.com. The Glauca is a massive knife, but some of the other folders are smaller.

Where are they made? What steel for the blade? Handle material?

Extrema Ratio is made in Italy. The blade is made of N690 cobalt stainless steel, while the handle is made from a coated aluminum (it feels like a flat black powder coat). I use the knife for concealed carry, and haven't put it to the test in everyday situations, but it is pretty large and I have trouble cutting open boxes with a $350 knife. The company has a website but it is pretty dumb. http://www.extremaratioknivesdivision.eu/english/

Looks good, but it 100% fighting knife and it pricey. Good gift for an officer.

This one was under the tree this morning. Absolutely love it. It was right next to a Ruger 5 shot .357 Short barrel "no hammer" LCR series, an ugly no frills carry gun.
The gun was a complete surprise.

I love my wife
