Newbie here

Hi everyone. I just had picked up my brothers bike. It sat for 2 yrs. He past away back in February. It sat outside under a cover.

It needs a new battery. But don’t want to spend crazy amount of dollars for a battery just yet. Is there one I can get say from Advanc, Autozone?
Also. I am not sure abt the amount of oil in it. I popped off filler cap. Really didn’t see to much. I am gonna change it. But would be ok to see if it will start after new oil. Worried abt licking it up since pistons, cylinders, valves etc.. haven’t had a touch of oil in long time.

I am gonna pull spark plugs to see what they look like. Or should I just go with new.

my plan on is to get fresh gas in it, new battery and oil. See what happens. Any thoughts, ideas?

Welcome ! You can find cheap batteries at Walmart , Auto zone etc. I would drain the carb bowles and change the oil but I seriously doubt it will start after 2 years the carburetors on these are very finicky .I am very sorry to here about the loss of your brother.

Lots of info here in past threads. Use the search function to research subjects you need to learn. 'Carb overhaul' would be a good one to familiarize yourself with the way the carbs work. Unless you're a bike mechanic, you don't want to tear-into the carbs without knowing what you're doing.

Stand the bike vertical on level ground. Look in the right side round window on the engine side cover. Oil level should be visible in the middle. If you change the oil, change the filter too. Look for info in the search function on suitable oils, many use diesel oil, Shell Rotella T.

Before trying to turn-over the engine buy a can of PB Blaster and give the spark plug holes (yes, plugs removed) a 2 or 3 second spray. Let it sit for several days. Plugs seated loosely. Then remove the plugs, and with the bike on the center stand, turn the rear wheel a bit each time and change the gearshift into 5th gear. You should feel the engine turning over. If it won't turn over, the piston rings are probably rusted in the bores. It may need more (piston) ring-soak time. Once in 5th gear you should be able to turn over the engine using the rear wheel.

welcome to the forum ..... use the sight glass right side lower side of motor while on center stand fill a little more than halfway in sight glass rotella 15w40 t4 oil works best
