Well I'm sick of the backpack now and I can't afford the hard bags.
I'd like to get either some textile or leather saddlebags that will fit
the Max. I plan on doing the relocate for the turn signals so now I
need to find some bags. I have Supertrapps on the bike and they seem
to point up-wards more than the stockers. I'd like something that I
can slip under the pillion, will zip off and be lockable somehow so
they can't walk away or be opened when I leave the bike unattended.
I don't mind putting on supports if needed but not sure if the universal
ones I've seen at Dennis Kirk will work. I know it's a tall order but has
anyone out there done this ? Tried to do the search but really couldn't
find anything. :ummm:
Thanks in advance,
Chris

What kind of material are you looking for? Leather, plastic, cloth? Do you have a sissy bar to fasten a seatpack too? There are quite a few posts on here regarding different setups and how to "do" what they did.
Try the search word "saddlebags". :thumbs up:

Here's the small set of saddlebags that I have on - also have a larger set but no pics right now - used the signal stalks and the upper shock mounts as bolting points - riveted a piece of plexiglass on the inside back panel for strength - they don't lock in anyway, but come off in a couple of minutes (2 bolts holding each one). Been using this set up for years with good results.

Thanks Redbone,
Not sure what I typed in earlier, thought it was saddlebags but not much
showed up. Just typed it in and a bunch of threads popped up.
Textile or leather, I have the factory sissybar and just got a luggage rack
off fleabay. The new rack is pretty small and sits up too high for my tastes.
Looking at building new mounting brackets to lower it so I could mount
a sissybar bag.
Thank again,
Chris

Hey that is a sharp setup. I found a set of saddleman bags that have
all the features I want. I was thinking I could use your idea but make
the plate on the outside of the bag, just as a support. Not sure if I
would want to cut holes in the bags. It sure looks nice ond clean though.
That may be the way to go. I attached the pic of the saddlemans.
Also has anyone seen these bag supports anywhere ? Anyone
try these ?
Thanks Mike

I believe an outfit in Canada used to make those bag supports. Sold on eBay for a while but stopped some time ago (At least a year). I emailed them asking if they were going to make more but they never answered. They are the only supports I have ever seen for the Max in the 12 years I have been looking for Max accessories. A company in Germany called "Five Star" used to make brackets for Givi saddlebags (which are great), but also stopped. A guy in England makes brackets that allow the use of Givi WingRacks but these stick up way too far and look terrible. I have used fabric bags with success. I moved my signals to a bracket on the license plate to make room for the bags.

I use Willy & Max small slant bags - they fit great. I have an old pic in here somewhere. I don't keep them on all the time - only when needed. Just pop off the rear seat & drop them on once they're fitted. Bought from Dennis Kirk or JC Whitney - can't remember for sure. Check the old posts...

Hi Mike,
Were your saddlebags originally throw overs that you cut the yoke off
or were they zip offs? What guage of aluminum did you use on the bags
and bottoms ? Kinda leaning your way on mounts unless I can fab up
another support.
thanks,
Chris

Hey , those are pretty interesting looking. Couldn't
see the logo are they Nellson Riggs ? Are those pieces
on the back fiberglass or what ?
Thanks,
Chris

I read on here that Virago saddlebag support will work.
Is this right and if so does anyone know of a certain year.
Thanks again,
Chris

I cut off the throw over staps on the small bags (ones in picture) but not on the large bags that I have. I left them on the big bags and they go over the pillion seat for extra support.

Used plexiglass on the inside back panel of saddlebag - fastened in place with aluminum rivets - the other plastic you see on the bottom and sides was already there from the factory.

The saddlebags in the pictures are Willie & Max slant bags.

If you decide to go this way - let me know and I can provide more details if needed.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'm thinking of using a version
of Maxcruisers mounts. Figured I could build it just like Mikes
but leave the fiberglass plate externally mounted. I could
then drap the bags over them like traditional mounts. Then
I could attach velcro to the plate & bags to keep them
from flopping around. That way I could unzip and carry them
with me easily. If that doesn't work then I could attach them internally
like Mike did. When I get this project up and running I'll take
some pics and see how it turns out. Props to all for the ideas and
special props to Mike.
Thanks,
Chris
