i'm not pushing one system over another--am just sharing what worked for me, which was pulling from the inside instead of from the outside (via jaws). if you closely compare the Stinger with the PCW you'll notice that they share a similar "crow's foot" bolt pattern.

you'd definitely get enough pull from that


but, rest assured, you'll get it off eventually. it took me i think 5 nights, but i think only because i wasn't using the right tooling. also it took one of the forum experts to show me exactly how much pressure to use (and it is a lot)--prior to his visit i would stop 3 or 4 turns short of the necessary amount out of fear of busting something up on the bike. just get the right tooling (a kick ass puller, grade 8 bolts, and a cheater....or your hydraulic puller)

Man, I guess I really got off easy when I had to change my stator. Autozone rental puller and about 3 minutes had mine off. Impact as tight, whack bolt with a mini-sledge, repeat like twice and off it went. No breaker bars, no snapped bolts, no torches.

Honestly getting the actual stator cover off was more of a pain in the ass, had to pry the whole way around to make the original gasket let go.

This is nuts. I rang around to rent a hydraulic puller. I found someone who had an 11 tonne one for hire (YAY!), and he wanted $145 for 24hrs rental!!!!!

Dang, bro. I don't know what to say other than to agree with your previous comment that the tool isn't as hardy as you thought. Here in the States, one can go to an automotive shop and rent/borrow the puller. Do you have any resources like that? Perhaps a garage, or a local mechanic? I've never heard of the flywheel being on so tight that it bends the puller. You mean the "foot" bent/bowed, right? Sorry for the following possibly insulting question, but I have to ask: "You took out the retaining bolt and oil pipe, right?"

I would think so, but I'm not the person you should rely solely on for a qualified answer to this--I am not a pro or "specialist", just a green hobbyist. I would hope one of the resident experts will chime in with an opinion. there are a lot of more qualified members, but the two that come to mind off the top of my head are: one2dmax and CaptainKyle. Contact them.

Maybe you could try to get in contact with Jedi. He is in NZ. He's a member here. Maybe he would rent you his puller. He is a very competent machinist and has designed his own version that he said has been used successfully many times.

I think I paid around 70 bucks for my puller & it is stout. Its made solid & has a bearing in it. It has no fingers sticking out to flex.

i broke my first crowfoot puller right in half, so if they're cheaply made it'll happen.

No I haven't yet. I think if I buy a 3-jaw type I will stop f'ing about and buy the 15t hydraulic one. I am not happy about spending the money, but if I spend $50 on a cheap 3 jaw and it doesn't work I'l be poorer and still have the same problem. Still trying to stretch my already blown budget! :biglaugh:

Ninjaneer was not kidding when he said A $H!T TON of persuasion was required!

Because I managed to take in the advise here, I stood on the other side of the bike and operated the puller from there. (The whole shit ton of force letting go, possibly in an uncontrolled manner, had crossed my mind.)

I could see the flywheel moving as though the crank nose was flexing.
A short time after I started getting seriously worried there was an almighty BANG. :clapping:

The puller weighs 22lb (10kg) and touched down at close enough to 3 feet (90cm) away! :biglaugh:

The chinese puller I got was way too big, and surprisingly good quality. It took about 1.5hrs with the angle grinder to get the legs to fit. It was worth it!

I totally recommend overkill for this job!

Warning!

When undoing the 3 bolts, be wary if they feel tight!

I carefully pulled the first 2 out without problem. Then I just quickly pulled the last one out. It was a bit tight, but the others had come out OK....
