Modify your puller as shown here. I can confirm it does the trick from personal experience.

Not having had to yet get that far into my motor, it is better to prepare now. how-long are the 1" rods? I think that is something I am gonna look for at the scrapyards. A good mod! Thanks for the tip.

I haven't got mine apart any more, but I'll have a look at the length of the bolts I used with my crows foot puller. That should give you an idea.
