I ran across this when looking for "word origins" etymology for something else.

No context here, it stands alone and was in a thread about the usage of "coon" versus "coon-ass

--------------------------------------------------

I briefly worked at a sugar refinery in rural Louisiana, all of the cajuns I worked with embraced it. Even the non-cajuns used it as a compliment when someone was "hillbilly or redneck"-ish in a positive way.
Time for one of my favourite stories.
I'm in the lunch room and a guy runs in and yells "There's a Rabbit on the lawn!" At least half a dozen guys jump up and run out, presumably to shoot it. The two guys I'm sitting with just shrug.
One says "fucking coon asses, looking for a free lunch."
The other says "...and a free hat."
