I`m having a problem with my central air and heater,
I live in a mobile home and have an older coleman central air unit.
It has worked fine until this morning when I turned on the a/c and the heater came on with it causing the house to heat up so, I went out to check it out and I cleaned upand reconnected some wires that looked oxidized and it seemed to work but a little while later, my daughter told me that the living room was extremely hot so she turned it off again.
If I disconnect the wire going to the switch on the heater from the transformer where all the wires hook up, it stays off and thea/c works
but when I re connect it , the heater comes on again.:confused2:
I`m sorry for the story but I wanted to explain just whats happening with this thing(it just started this morning).:ummm:
(Thanx in advance)

Somwhere near or on the thermostat or the unit itself there should be a switch hot/cold heat/cool summer/winter.....something like that.....

My guess is a faulty switch

Thats what I`m thinking `cause the contacts are like an open circut board
with raised solder acting as switch posts that are probably worn or shorting against each other but, it`s always more assuring to hear from someone who knows.
thank you,
for now I can sitch themback and forth but I`m going to put another thermostat in and see what happens.

Without going through a lot of troubleshooting save yourself the time and just replace the thermostat first.

Then troubleshoot it from there if needed.

Make sure it's designed specifically for either electric or gas heat, whichever you have.

This won't cost much and could save a lot of time.

I've seen really older (like 50's-60's) homes that had some sort of separate switch besides the thermostat that set heat or cold, but everything I've been around in my life the thermostat itself had a switch that set it for heating or cooling.
