Polished up a set of scoops last weekend. I love the new shiny look, but DAMN was it hard! I didn't really know what I was doing, but got a lot of help from Kenneth Kirkpatrick's instruction page: http://www.geocities.com/am20924/VMaxPolish.html Didn't follow his instructions to a tee, but the job got done and they turned out very well. Used an extra set of scoops and side covers I got from NaughtyG's ebay salvage bike, so I wouldn't screw up the near perfect stock two-tone scoops and covers.

Anyway, after almost a full day of hard work and skinned fingertips, the things turned out awesome. I like the old school look. Just a note to anyone considering polishing out their scoops, it's alot more work than you would think, but I'm very happy with the results. Here's some before and after pics.

chrome has a different look but it's much easier to maintain. Polishing required continual repolishing. You can use zoops seal to help maintain it but still sucks. Plus, the stock castings suck and there are areas that look like crap in them that won't polish out.

That's a few of the big reasons we started offering the chrome services.

looks good, going to do mine, chrome is nice but nothing beats the look of polishied metal

You know your stuff, Sean. There are many imperfections, striations and blemishes on the surface of the scoops. A few spots that I thought were pits were actually tiny bubbles in the castings. Nothing could be done to remove these flaws, so I'll live with them for a while. But I can see I'll need to repolish these at least every month or so. What does it cost to chrome a set of scoops and side covers anyway, just for future reference?

Here's some pricing - I keep saying that I will increase the prices but haven't done it yet.

Muscle Part Number – Part Description - Price with your parts shipped direct - (Price with my exchange parts (must be good condition with minor scratches allowed))
ADD 7% to the price for environmental fees. Black Chrome is available as well – add 20% for that cost. Some parts available two-toned with both black and regular chrome – cost is much more for those items (but they are a pretty cool look).

When you say repolish them every month are you saying sanding them back again or just polishing them .:ummm:

I have done mine took a better part of the day doing it. Its not as good as I wanted so I will be redoing it.

I polished my scoops when I had the max. They do have many imperfections in them and they show up when polished. I sanded mine down with a DA and then used a polishing wheel on the end of a bench grinder. I probably only had about 2 hours in them.

You won't have to sand them again unless you roadrash them. There are many fine products that will keep the shine going but you'll still need to re-polish them every so often to keep the look. More so if they get wet. I haven't tried the Mother's Ball yet but it looks like it would do a great job with little effort.
