Starter problem

I have a new problem with my max. When I hit the starter switch the starter doesn't engage right away. Someone told me it could be the battery though when I connect a small charger it doesn't help.

Is the starter a common problem? My bike is an 04 with 18k miles on it.

First make sure your battery is good & is fully charged & not dying under a load. You can try jump starting it off a good battery. If your battery is good & it makes a grinding noise while trying to start you starter clutch is probably going bad.
