Good morning everyone. This is my first interaction on this sight. I joined a couple of years ago when I was trying to decide on my second bike. I owed an R6 but my new wife hated riding on the back. so I went out in joined the forum to learn a little more about the Vmax. At the time I decided to get a Warriior, with some influence from wife but always look back at not getting the Vmax. Fastward 3 years later and I'm back looking at the Vmax. I am going to keep the Warrior as the "family ride" but it looks like I'm going to part with the R6. Is there anything I should look for or look out for in buying a used Vmax? Anything different from model years 85 thru 07? Or is it exactly the same bike?

Any all help would be appreciated. Thanks

do a search thru the forum, there are lists of the changes, but anything about 2002 and up will have the latest mods, including bigger diameter forks, spin on oil filter, newer drilled brakes and have 2nd gear fixed.

not saying a 80's or 90's wouldn't be good, but if you can swing it, newer the better. also with any carb'd bike a low mileage bike is not always great as its been sitting...

another v-max gotcha would be to any you take out, esp 2000 and lower ish, really pound on 2nd gear and see if it pops out. if it does, you don't want it, unless its really cheap as you have to crack the cases to fix it.

considering you can get 02's and up for as little as 4K in great shape I would get a newer one. I have an 85 and have spent over 8k getting it perfect (including cost of the bike). Any bike you buy that is as old as mine is gonna have a LONG and sometimes dark history. I became VERY frustrated in just my 1st month of ownership with my 85.

I love the bike now but it took alot to get here and without this forum it would have never happened! The big issues with the older ones are fork seals, carbs, electrical gremlins, steering head bearings, rust in gas tank, various leaks and the list can go on.

Don't let this scare you cause it is a very reliable bike when maintained properly but my bike sat outside for God knows how long and mother earth beat the piss outta here during that camping trip!

Good luck!

Abe

By popping out in second gear you mean slipping out?

The dogs round over which allows them to not grab on to each other and hold.

2003 and up has all the new items. The newer you can afford the better as long as the newer has been taken care of.

That's the big thing. You can find some mid 90's bikes that are in as good if not better condition than some of the newer ones.

Just make sure you stay with 93 and later as they made some very nice changes in '93.

Lemme know if you see one for this.
I paid 5200 for an 03 with 6200 miles. I have been told I got a killer deal, guess not.

Anyway like many have said. Mine did sit for a while. Runs good but I need to put a few $$$ into it for a carb job etc.

i picked up my '03 in october for $4200 with 1800 miles.... but you probably wont' find a deal like that.

it was in rough cosmetic shape (dirt/grime etc) and missing mirrors/side panels etc.

rubber was shot.

I appreciate the input from eveyone. Hopefully my search will work out and I can be an active member of the forum. Not very many available in my area.

98 - $6000.00
89- $4000.00
07- $10000.00
06- $8500.00
06- $7000.00

That is 250 mile search on CycleTrader and Ebay.

whast the mileage on each? the '06 for 7k might not be bad

Miles and condition next to each one would be nice. The 2006 stands out to me...

FYI: The less it has been screwed with the better IMO. I know a lot of guys like to buy them already done, but many times they are done wrong...

Hooking up with a member of this forum near you to go look at them wouldn't be a bad idea.

we still might be comparing apples to oranges. post a link up for each! a full exhaust and stage 7 on the 8500 '06 might be well worth it compared to a stck '06...

Not sure...BUT I do know anything after 1985 is junk and slow as shit:rofl_200::eusa_dance:

Really? You sure YOU want to go there?

Maybe I should check out your past post over the last year or so... :biglaugh:

'03 was FB with stripes. The paint work is easily swapped out though.
