Hey all, looking to replace all 16 carb cover screws with either similar to stock, torx, hex, etc. & quite possibly in stainless. Is the correct size going to be 12mm x .5 or something different? Lastly, what is a good web site to go to that would sell these in small qty. and at a good price?

I bought mine @ home depot. 16 black capscrews for $2
I took one with me to match it up. I think they are 6mm x 25mm, but don't quote me on that.

If you need a screw size (sounds interesting), go to a parts list site with part numbers and the middle section of the number tells you what the size is. For example, go to:

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx

Step 1: motorcycle
Step 2: 1998 (or whatever you have)
Step 3: VMX1200K V-MAX

on left, choose carburetor and zoom in a little and scroll to bottom of the picture and you'll see the screws in question, numbers 5 and 6. I guess one is the normal and one is the "Special" hard to remove one. Anyway, the frame under the picture has the item number, part numbers, description and notes columns. scroll to item 6 and see that the part number is 97801-05012-00. The middle section, 05012 indicates the size 05 in diameter x 012 mm long

I saw that at http://vmaxoutlaw.com/main.html under VMAX Tech and Info on the left navigation list and under MISC in right frame, called "What Size is that bolt ?" by Terry Campbell. It points out that some special bots don't follow that standard, but it should be obvious when they don't.

FYI, if you want to get a ballpark cost for parts, go to:
http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/parts/home.aspx
and navigate to the VMAX section and to the area of the bike that you want to see costs for. If you order from University Motors or K&N, You'll get much better prices (maybe around 40% less than these prices, just check), but at least you'll be able to get some idea.

Has anybody had problems taking the screws out? Mine are stuck! I used a long shaft snap on screw driver with a #2 tip and cant get it out. As far as replacement screws go i order mine from Ronnies mail order.

Here's a tip.

When you put those new screws in use a nickel anti-seize grease. This will stop them corroding in the aluminium alloy and make them easy to remove next time.

Same for ALL steel bolts that seat into alloy threads. e.g. enginecases, fork braces etc.

Yea, even with anti-sieze they get locked in sometimes. I generally use a pair of vice grips to crack them loose (sometimes an impact screwdriver works well too).

Japanese phillips head screws are different that American phillips head. I searched the 'net for JIS screwdrivers & bought a whole set. These fit much tighter than any others - they won't "cam out" as easily. I'll look up the vendor & post it later if anybody is interested.

http://www.mcmaster.com/ - search for "JIS" and it will take you to the right page - I bought the standard screwdriver set for $22.29 & haven't stripped another head yet - I'm not saying regular screwdrivers won't work , but I'm a tool nut anyway & had to give these a try.
