I never thought about this when someone posted a Whine coming from their rear end, so this info is not to be credited to me but another member (Nick) from another forum: here is the C&P from another forum.

I recently had a horrible whining coming from the back end, having just fixed a water leak problem I had a horrible suspicion it might have been something grim in the engine. However I was due to fit new tires and as it is easier to have the bike sitting with the back wheel in I replaced the rear on a spare wheel. when I came to fit the new wheel and tire I took the original out to discovered the wheel bearing had collapsed due to a slightly warped rear disc shaking it to pieces. I had checked for play before removing the wheel but couldn't feel any, this being due to the way the wheel gear engages with the diff housing.

Worth a check
