Here's an interesting thread on garagejournal.com for a storage shelving unit, which could easily be used for bikes, or whatever heavier, bulky items you need to store. The shelves are cable raised and lowered. He uses an electric cable hoist.

The guy used unistrut and their various fittings, very little welding. I guess you could just get some pallet shelving and have storage, but the cool thing here is being able to put one bike (for instance) onto its shelf, and lifting it high, for storage of another bike underneath. As this guy did, he has a higher ceiling, so he has multiple shelves. Not all of us have a forklift at the garage to store/retrieve stuff off the pallet shelving!

Be sure to read all posts, as there are good suggestions about upgrading the cable hooks, tying it to the wall, and the crimps being doubled on the lift cables.

My one criticism: throw-out those chairs on the top shelf, what's the guy thinking, he's wasting a lot of space that could be another motorcycle, or two! :ummm::confused2::hmmm:

This was not an expensive storage system. You can build it yourself.
