I propose that everyone who is in the process of butchering a stock bike into a "bobber" be exposed to "Clockwork Orange" behavior modificarion, complete with music and eyelid openers as pictures of these abominations interspersed with pics of the most vile behavior by mankind in the hopes that fewer of these stock bikes will be ruined.

Sure, I am using hyperbole here, your bike, do what you like, but what in heaven's name makes these people think their butchery automatically doubles or triples a really-clean unmolested bike's value?

Well you get the idea. What examples of that which should have been left alone can you find?
 
Anything built by OCC or Paulie Jr. Just as ugly as these abortions, but WAY more expensive.
Proof that money cannot buy taste or class.

I love motorcycles and all kinds of different mods. But that doesn't mean I'd ride some of those horror shows, today. I remember taking a ride on a very nice looking Matchless many moons ago. Hit the only bake and nothing happened, except down shifting and foot dragging. I still see the owner of that Mtchless, we laugh about it, but it could have been bad for me.
OCC? I can't believe people want those things still. Before I'd hand over big $ to OCC i'D have Sean build an incredible Vmax and show that, when not tearing the rode up. A bike with a good looking engine to start with. IMO.

But, like you said, it's their bike. I guess there's no law for ugly.
 
I suspect Sean could build an absolute dream of a Vmax for about 1/10th what OCC gets for some of their chromed-out trailer queens.

I guess for a city bike, or strictly bopping around town to pose with at bike nights those bobber look bikes could be cool, but practical? not even close.

"Power" I guess is all relative. When I first got my GS450 I thought it was adequately peppy, since it would beat cars thru intersections and keep me at 75mph on the highway, and that was with 22hp. I thought the top speed of one of those Rebel 250's was right around 70, assuming you weren't too fat and had a tailwind.
 
I think (I'm not alone, I know) that the words bobber and chopper have had their meaning lost.
I love a good bobber, and I don't mind a well executed new age jap bobber.
But those idiots are doing it all just for looks, and to be honest, they look like a mess!

The Triumph looks like a good project bike to me. It has loads of potential!
That is what I think the modern definition of bobber has become.
ie. The look that comes from a rigid rear end and springer seat. To me, they need an exhaust that works, and all mods needs to make the bike better.

A bike like that is not easy to do (legally) in Australia, because the law is that the frame is the bike. As soon as you put a single cut into a frame, it is now a new frame (bike), and must be registered as a new bike, and comply with the current build regulations.

Once upon a time I had a BSA B33 basket case, which I had to sell, and I really wish I still had it. It was a rigid pre unit 500cc single. Just right for a "proper" bobber with the modern look.

Its similar up here in Alaska too.

If you cut into a motorcycle frame, swap engines. It now has to be registered as a reconstructed vehicle. Same with cars and trucks. If you change the suspention, frame, engine, its a reconstructed vehicle. Alot of people don't do it, cause it messes with re-sale value and there isn't reconstruction police. I've had a few friends that bought vehicles and bikes in that shape. A couple registered just fine, but a couple others ran into some trouble.

Yes. That's the problem here.
We don't have yearly inspection in my state, so if it is registered, you COULD change it.
But if the police decide they don't want you riding any more, they put an infringement on the bike. You get 14 days to hand in the tags, or present the bike for full inspection.
Even brake caliper adaptors are illegal. The idea is to NEVER piss off a policeman. I'm OK with that, but not all policemen are good people.

Bloody 'ell. Learning something new everyday! You and I need to get together and discuss a lot of this stuff, I haven't got a clue about rules & regs over here..
 
Heaven help our Australian brothers! Tough regs! Probably all jurisdictions have something similar but how many use it frequently?
