I'm looking at replacing my starter and the starter relay switch.

I found online 2002 starter yamaha model 1FK-81890-00-00 for $269.00.
Will this 1 fit my 1992 bike.

I seen on ebay vmax starters after market going for $89.00 to $150.00

Any 1 use the after market starters and what company you bought yours from.
Did they hold up.

what year should i be looking for.

According to Ron Ayers cross reference the 1FK-81800-10-00 Four brush) was fitted to '97 to 2000 bikes.

The 1FK-81890-00-00 is listed for '85 - '93 and '01 - '07

However, the Yameringha parts fische lists 1FK-81800-10-00 as fitting '85 - '01.

My best guess is that there are multiple supersessions here and the inference is that any V Max starter will fit an year bike.
Confused? I am.

The issue you may have is knowing what it is you are buying as there is guarantee the part on the bike is original equipment.

What you are looking for is a four brush motor which can be identified as follows:
SM-13 = 4-brush starter 93-94 on. SM-229C = 2-brush starter

The field coils in the 2 brush starter are attached by 2 cross head bolts which are visible on the outside of the centre section of the motor. The 4 brush motor has no visible cross head bolts.

It would have been helpful if the individuals who setup these websites, would get an accurate expanded drawing of the starter motor, instead of copying from existing diagrams.

Look at all the expanded diagrams from these different years.. They're all the same, even though there was a change made to the 4 pole starter after a certain year.

The only difference I can see the back plate is oriented differently in the picture between 2000 and 2001 and the screw part listing numbers has changed.

Thanks for the info, man still confuse, so to be safe look for a 2005 model starter. or the 1993 to 1994. I search the net for more info man it's really confusing.

I found this on the net in a venture site.
1990 and newer 1st gen VMax's have the 4 brush starter.

Thanks traumahawk, man so much confusing info on the net.

Do you think I should buy yamaha parts or after market on ebay...

Well ebay is a good place to buy stuff...BUT I would only buy something that had the 4 brush yamaha part number on it.......OR better.....buy from Sean. That way you KNOW its the right one.

And where do you suggest that 'the individuals' get these pictures from?
We know that Yameringha changed the design but if they haven't updated the parts fische what the alternative?

The not-updated fiche diagram is a common issue and not only w/Yamaha. Try looking at the front frame crossmember by the oil cooler in the fiches, where the curved crossmember came into being after the spin-on filter was adopted. I bet you won't see the curved frame brace/crossmember.

Are you sure?
The Yameringha parts fische lists the brushes separately for models 85 - 92 but as an assembly from 93 onwards when I thought they changed to the four brush motor.

Happy to be corrected if wrong though.

Do you guy's think the after market starters or ok to use or stick with buying a yamaha starter.
