Can anyone tell me if you need to drain the oil to remove the large right side engine cover by the rear brake master cylinder? I want to refinish it and was trying to save a step. 03 vmax. :ummm:

Not 100% on this but I think so....you can remove the large oil plug on the same side by rolling the rear wheel up on a flat 2 x 4 and leaning the bike on the side stand.

Did this to install an oil pressure gauge, and that plug is lower than the cover you're referring to.

Sounds like the clutch cover. You should have a gasket on hand when you remove it. The old ones don't like coming off in one peice. Also, leave it on the sidestand (not centerstand) and you won't need to drain the oil.
