Just got my forks apart so I can change the seals.
Was confused by the different capacities listed in my
owners manual and the on-line service manual. I finally
snapped that the on-line manual is referencing the
93 and newer capacity of 20.9 oz per tube. The earlier
models show 15.2 oz per tube, this being due to the
40mm tubes. This may be redundent for alot of the members
here but for a newbie such as myself it can be confusing.
Fork oil level is not listed so I'm not sure if the 4.8 inches
from top of tube would apply.

good to know man...

i haven't done vmax forks, but i have done others. mainly on a shitter bike so it was good to learn on. with numbers so exact as 20.9, how do u guys ensure that amt is actually in the tube? with whatever container you are using, probably .05 - .2 oz are stuck to the side b/c of the thick oil eh?

Good question,
Only thing I can think of is to convert to cc's
then pick up a ratio rite to pour in correct
amount. I'll probably pick one up tomorrow.

Use a turkey baster or some such sucking instrument, measure the height you want the fork oil down from the top, place a mark on the baster to line up with the top of the fork tube. Then just push or pull fluid as required.

i'd still say there is going to be some residual stuff. if it had to be 20 oz and you could have even .2 oz wiggle room that would be one thing, but to the nearest tenth of a oz is pretty damn tough..

I just rebuilt my forks with Racetec setup.
Racetec recommended 160mm from the top of the fork to the fluid level. which is about 6 and 1/4 inches.
That is with the fork completely compressed.
With the way the forks are extended above the cap I added .75th of an inch.
I used a turkey flavor injector with a stiff tube on it that I measured at 7" total length, and used that to suck out any excess fluid.
Worked perfect.

Cowboy-I bought 02Moneypit's front end that has this set-up in it for my '06. You're gonna like it!!

That's exactly how I do them every time. Makes sure they match, and it's easy to make minor adjustments.

Couldn't find a measurement from the top of the fork
for my 89. Does anyone know what it's supposed to
be and if it is measured collapsed and with the springs in
or what. The 15.2 oz comes out to right around 450 cc
per side.
Thanks

Transam1, for early forks it should be 5.5 inches. Make sure you compress the forks and remove the springs and preload spaces before measuring.

Thanks Mark,
I had converted the oz. to cc and just dumped 450 cc
in each fork before I saw your post. Took just a bit under 1 qt to fill both
forks. I allready have everything buttoned up due to rain
coming in. ( I have no garage ) Am I pretty close or way off here ?
There is a break in the rain and I really want to ride. If I need
to I'll pull the caps, spacers and springs again and measure.
Thanks,
Chris

You are very close....manual calls for for 451 cc for early forks.
