G?day fellow maxers (first post),
The other day my fuel pump started making the priming sound after kicking over the engine. You know the sucking sound the fuel pump makes when you turn the ignition? Well that ticking noise normally stops when you hit the starter and now the bloody thing sounds like it?s pumping all the time (it starts pumping again after the engine starts)? Not sure what to do, I live in Brisbane and I?ve already taken the bike to one of my local Yamaha dealers for a service but they didn?t know if replacing the fuel pump would fix the problem so weren?t keen on charging me 500 bucks just to find out. I can get the pump for around $160 US delivered to Australia from the US but I?m not sure if it will do the trick as the bike still runs fine like the pump is doing its job. Does anyone think this could be a control unit problem? I just don?t know how to test the control unit? Any ideas or tips would be tops.
Thanks for all and any advice.

David :bang head:

Any overflow, crappy fuel milage, fuel filter partly clogged???

The pump should shut off when the bowls fill up, or 5 seconds at cold start.

Neil

No overflow and the fuel filter has been cleaned? funny you should say crappy fuel mileage though as when I mentioned to the Yamaha mechanic I was only getting around 100km to reserve (around 60 miles) he said that was probably all I could expect to get. I?ve only had the bike for around three months and it hasn?t got any worse or better since the fuel pump issue but I did think getting 60 mile to a tank (city) is pretty crappy. The pump stops for maybe a seconds after the bike is started and then it starts running again :( but as far as I can tell nothing has really changed in terms of fuel consumption.

Unless you are beating the crap out of him constantly, your mileage is terrible!

Since the pump is controlled by the module, I would look there if everything else is up to par!

You should get 25-30 miles or so per gallon under normal conditions. That gas is going somewhere! Is the vboost intact or open all the time? Have you checked the oil to make sure there is no gas in it???

Float levels could be too high, but, something is going on for sure!

Neil

I thought the mileage was really shitty but the yamaha service centre here said it was normal(monkeys)... The bike is a Japan import to Australia but originally from Canada so I have no history on it :( It seams strange that a Japanese bike was imported to Japan from Canada but seeing japan only got the 100hp model I guess it makes some sense.
What tells the fuel pump to stop pumping? Is it the control unit or something internal in the pump itself?

The fuel pump has a cutoff that bases itself on flow resistance.

Have you tried running on reserve all the time to eliminate the fuel level sensor and the relay???

With that mileage, something is going on.

Food for thought:

I would buy the pump new and the relay used if that is what you decide, unless, you hear the pump working. I've been through 2 tanks, 2 senders, and 2 pumps in 25 years, but, never the relay.

Maybe a small hole in the pump diaphragm (I know I spelled that wrong!)??
Would pump gas into the carburetors, but would never let the pressure build up enough to shut it off.

I've wonderd if you could use an aftermarket electric fuel pump from a car in place of the stock pump. Just have it turn on with ignition. I'm sure they have a pressure regulator in them, and they'd sure as hell e cheaper than a Yamaha part..... Just a thought.

I would suggest taking the fuel line off at the carb bank (line from the fuel pump) and first, point it into a jar, turn key on and see how much fuel pumps out. If it has good flow, than plug the end of hose with a bolt or something else, than turn key on and see if fuel pump turns off from the pressure, if not bad pump or cut off switch.

If it's the latter, switch or pump, I would start by disassembling the fuel pump and check rubber diaphrams for cracks, holes.

60 miles per tank (reserve) is very bad mileage. How are the sparkplugs, carbon fouled?

Mike

Sounds like the pump is having a hard time building the right pressure.

The pump is fairly simple to reach with the seat and faux top cover off.

Disassembly of the pump itself is also easy.

Once you take the pump motor away from the plastic parts of the pump/diaphram assy, you can clearly see two tiny little rubber nipples and spring combos in both sides of the assy. One rubber nipple/spring combo will be near the inlet side of the pump assy, the other on the outlet side.

I'm betting you have problems with the outlet side combo and the little rubber nipple has come dislodged from it's seat.

This is what happened to mine a couple years ago. I used a small tipped screwdriver to very carefully reinsert the small tip of the rubber nipple back into the hole where it belongs and my pump has been working fine ever since.

I can't imagine any shop charging that much to replace a $160.00 pump either.

Worst case scenerio, you buy a new pump and replace it yourself, IF yours cannot be repairs as stated above.

All this info is only good if you truly have an unobstructed pathway between your fuel tank and filter to the pump to begin with.

Good luck

Thanks jfeagins you were right on the money and have saved me a lot of time, money and f’n around! The Northstar yamaha service team said they took my fuel pump apart and couldn’t see anything wrong with it.. I’m guessing if they really did pull it apart as they charged me labour to do so they would have seen the little nipple floating around lose as I did… pricks! Thanks Guys for all the help and thanks gleno for the manual and testing info!

Hi David78, I am in Brisbane too, and have just got my vmax from 50miles per tank to now getting around 100 to 110 to reserve. I have spent alot of time trying to identify the problem and done many of the recommended fixes. Let me know if you would like me to have a look and recommend any of the fixes that are described here. My mobile number is 0417 783 451. I would assume the plugs would be carbonfouled with that milage. Mine were so black they were fouling and one plug would always foul. Give me a call.

No prolemo! You are welcome.

Glad I could be of some assistance to someone else here on the board for a change. Everyone else and the tons of info they have posted previously have helped me greatly over the time I have been a member here.

I know I'm a useless source for tech info, so I just post porn every so often. Kinda balances out.

It should be pretty much the same. I have even taken parts from the Vmax pump and used it in conjuntion with an R1 pump. Only difference was the pipe orientation.

Just a guess here but since its a jap import would there be any immission gear on the bike like the imported car ?
