Hey guys I was interested in if anyone was interested in some
lowering brackets for the factory luggage rack. I have a design
layed out that a machinist friend of mine plans to build for me. I
set it up where its about 2.5 - 3 inches lower than stock. This places
it right above the rear reflector. I came up with this position due to
the fitment of my Kuryakyn grantour bag. This is the lowest that the
attachment to the sissybar will go. ( velcro wrap around ) I initially
was going to go lower but honestly it looked a little strange. Soon
as I get it mounted I will post pictures. Not sure what material we
will go with. I am assuming the easiest would be the 1/8 steel that
the factory ones are made of. I would like to see if Aluminum would
be possible. The guy who will do the work is strictly a machinist
and said he could put them together but it would be up to me to get
it powdercoated or chromed. The guy is a rider and a vet and
I'd like to help him out. I told him I'd get the design together
then he would build them and sale them if anyone is interested. His
name is Griz and he's having a hard time finding a job in his field.
He's an old school machinist, ( Think he has 25 yrs experience )
and the economic downturn along with the newer technology is hurting him.
I also told him maybe we could also design some saddle bag supports.
If anyone is interested let me know and I'll post pics soon as the
1st one is put together. Might be a couple of weeks though we
have a bike rally here next week and might take a bit to get together
with him as he lives out of town. If any alternative heights or ideas
are out there I'd be more than happy to listen to them.
Thanks,
Chris

I actually had one made about 10 years ago for my 95 Max. Had it chromed when I customized my 97. Attached a few pics. The stock one is way too high!! I think a bunch of people will be interested.

I also thought about doing this but I found a Tourmaster bag that fits perfectly with the stock position. Any lower and the bag sleeve wouldn't work.

i think danny has one thats p/c'd and it blends in much nicer

I knew someone here had a lower one. I saw yours on here and one
someone had taken a picture of that was lower. I thought the height
that you used was better. When I did the trial fit out of cardboard the
lower was to low for my bag. I believe mine may be about a 1/2 inch
lower than yours. It is just above the reflector. I had also thought
about a larger rack. Kuryakyn makes one that clamps to your existing
rack but figured for $80 - $90 I could make my own. My compliments
on the brackets they look great. How much to chrome them if you
don't mind my asking ?
Thanks,
Chris

Funny, I used cardboard to design my brackets also. Took them to a local metal-working shop with the originals so he could see how the tabs were formed. I replaced the reflector with a running light so I didn't want to go any lower and block the light. I think it is about 2 to 2.5 " below stock. I did have to make some adjustments and do some cleanup work before painting silver to match the originals.

The chroming was part of a large batch I had chromed for my current Max so I don't have a price on the brackets alone. Sean could probably give you a quote on chroming it. He will do all my future chrome work as the scoop he did for me came out better than any of the tons of work I had done locally (at two different chromers).

I was shooting for the same thing, trying to get my center of gravity lower when loaded up. I just ended up getting some aluminum flatstock and angle and pop riveting this guy together:
