No , that will go on the tail shaft of the tranny that's getting rebuilt. All very good guesses guys but it is not a catch can for broken parts.
Upon closer examination however it could ( as well as its proper function) be used to hide drugs if I had to hide drugs ( or had drugs to hide)

well it kinda looks like a load equalizer bracket for towing, since it connects directly to the axle.

In the 'old days,' there was a direct connection tube between the engine/tranny and the rear end. Fords used this on their flatheads.
