It's important to get oil pressure before you start the engine. Crank the motor without spark plugs until the oil light goes out. It only takes a few seconds.
You can hear the engine slow down as pressure builds up! :biglaugh:

So, just oil for assembly, nothing special required.

Thanks for all the info.
Sean, thanks for the "crank without plugs to get the oil pressure up". I new this but the brain had forgotten and I would've missed it this time.

The cases are clean and the internals are assembled but did not get to closing them up.
We've been suffering a heatwave here in Johannesburg and my workshop is few degrees higher than the outside temperature!

Will wait for next weekend as the weather report is predicting some relief.

PS. I'm using Permatex Ultra-grey for the casing. Any view pro or against?
I've heard different views on application. I tend towards thin film on one side but others recommend both sides.
One side, both sides, doesn't matter ??

Tks... Angelo

I just looked up the weather in Jburg.
Is it even getting over 30'c? I though you guys were tough! :rofl_200:

Looks like you are having beautiful spring days! (I bet you wish you motorbike was fixed.)

As usual, the info just keeps coming. I'll use the Permatex Ultra-grey as I've already bought it and no negatives have been raised.

bazwell, the weather has been fantastic for biking. I really can't take this anymore :damn angry: The rains normally have started, but Murphy says no rains while my VMAX is in the workshop.

Hey, I'm not that tough but the temperatures were over 30. 36 on weekend and higher in my garage.

The number of beers that requires would have meant the end of the VMAX.

Cheers Angelo

Hi All,

Wish you a great 2012!
After a long gap of work in my garage, forced by less important work but the paying kind, Ive returned to assembly:-

1) I've joined the casings.
2) Installed bearing retainers, oil pump, pipes, o-rings, etc.
3) closed up the oil pan.

Still have one concern and wont continue until I get your expert advice/opinion incase I need to remove the pump again.

Question:- The driven gear on the oil pump had a slight "rotational" play around the oil pump axle.
Is some play standard? Wasn't able to find anything in cd manual or internet.
Yamaha agent was not able to confirm, and part although not too expensive, has a
6 week wait.
I fitted the pump as a "general" bike spares specialist said it was ok to do so, but
I'm now having second thoughts.

If some play allowable, how much?

BTW. bazwell, still having fantastic weather in Jo'burg :) or rather :( with bike in garage.

Cheers

Hi, minutes after posting that my internet and cd manual searching over a couple of days had "failed", I found the same question and responses in our own forum. (from Sean obviously) :)

It seems the same query was asked and confirmed in 2009.

Re: Oil pump gear clearance?
No real spec that I am aware of and yes they are sloppy. Nothing to be concerned with.

Angelo sounds like your hands are full of rebuilding you bike, toss a few photo's of it up if you took any as you gone thur the rebuild. Hope your weather is good when you are ready to ride.

Yep. Mine should have been done months ago, but there has been hold ups.
As a result I am completely insane.
When I get this one all good, I'm buying a spare one. Never ever do I want to go thru this shit again! :bang head:

Hi Guys

Hope I've upload photos correctly. (1st time for me)
Pictures:-
1. Shows the culprit bearing.
2. Shows the complete frame with swingarm/drive shaft which should have accepted motor according to manual.
It didn't:bang head: after a lot of blood, sweat and tears so fell back to browsing for answers (should have been my plan-A), to discover a majority view that the swingarm/drive shaft should come off.
3,4,5 show the different stages of removal.

Last picture is a "before" view which I hope also to be the "after".

Question: Must the drive shaft and final drive be split by removing the 4 bolts or will it be possible line it up with the u-joint and replace the swingarm as a complete unit? Any detailed step-by-steps that someone can direct me to?

Cheers
Angelo

Hi,

Another question please:-

According to some posts, the middle driven gear can simply be pulled out by losening the 3 bolts and tugging by the u-jount thats bolted on.
If this is the case, any tricks as mine seems to be stuck.
Note I havn't used any tools for leverage just tried pulling by hand.

Tks... Angelo

The middle gears will be snug sometimes. Loosen up the two bolts running down through the case back in that area. You may need to use a blunt punch to get it started. I usually use a plastic hammer to hit against the body of the ujoint carrier.

I am able to install the entire swingarm, wheel, diff, and shock as an assembly but it's tricky. Most will find it easier to take those apart and put them back in one at a time.

Taking the engine in and out is far far easier if you take out that middle gear assembly though! I have actually removed and installed an engine before without even taking the back end apart. I won't be doing it that way anymore.

Hi Guys

Not much progress, waiting for weekend.

I did get the middle gear off with the help of a big blunt screwdriver. (Thanks Sean)

Plan for the weekend.

1) Fit motor to frame.
2) Fit middle gear.
3) Fit swingarm/drive-train as a unit without wheel.
I know Sean suggests splitting, but I'm a glutton for punishment.
If I struggle too much, I will split and fit separately.
4) Shocks
5) Wheel
6) Number plate Lol

Any further tips and tricks very welcome.

BTW. If you look at the last one of my photos in a previous post, you will see my RED bike with a chequered effect on the tailpiece.
Does anyone know if this was a factory setup/edition?
It does look it, but I havn't seen it anywhere else on the road or pictures.

Cheers
Angelo

Thanks for that.

Bought the bike with that paint job, and not able to contact the previous owner for any history.

Cheers

Hi All

Got thru quite a lot on the weekend.
My plan was:

1) Fit motor to frame.
2) Fit middle gear.
3) Fit swingarm/drive-train as a unit without wheel.
I know Sean suggests splitting, but I'm a glutton for punishment.
If I struggle too much, I will split and fit separately.
4) Shocks
5) Wheel
6) Number plate Lol

Did all except for number 6 :biglaugh:
3 went easier than I expected, although I do have a bruise where the diff fell off the trolley jack onto my knee!

Also did right footrest/brake assembly.
Couldn't complete left footrest/gear change assembly.
The reason being that the last fasteners left for the middle gear case cover were all short.
I must have placed the 2 longer ones which also hold the gear change assembly on some other cover. :confused2:
Don't think it a problem because I dont remember any bolt bottoming out. Its just causing a nuisance delay as I have to go to buy extras.

Cheers
Angelo

angelo, did anyone every asnwer you on lining up the final drive properly with the swingarm?
