Before I put my 85 Max in storage it was just tuned and running better than ever. Unfornunately I left half a tank of gas in it for 7 years. What is the minimum that should be done before running it?
 
Drain the gas tank and shine a flashlight to check for rust. Drain float bowls and see how the gas in there looks. Check condition of all fuel lines and replace the fuel filter.

I know this question will tell a lot about my experience level but where are these float bowls and what do they look like and what do I need to take apart to access them/clean them?

Houston we have a problem... :whistlin:

The float bowls are on the carbs. The carbs come out as a bank of 4 and are somewhat difficult to get out as a novice. It really is easy, but time consuming.

I would straight up replace the fuel tank all the lines and filter.

When completley done replacing everything I would run Seafoam in the gas for about 3-4 tanks just to clear everything out. 7 year old gas is WAY old...

Here is a quick tutorial. I took these shots last time I had my carbs out.

First off, you should get a service manual

Step 1, strip off the scoops, faux gas tank and airbox

You need to loosen the lower clamps on the carb throats and remove the throttle cables. It is a push-pull system that are held in with a "barrel" at the end of the cable. They can be a pain in the ass to remove. I'm sure someone here has a trick in getting them out.

Carbs are out! :banana: You have to remove the bracket on each side and a throttle link in the center to split the carbs into pairs.

Make sure you do this in a "clean" area on a workbench as some of the clips are SMALL and HARD TO FIND if dropped! :whistlin:

Here are the float bowls. A proper sized screwdriver is essential as the screws will probably be a bastard to get out and they will strip easy.

Inside the floatbowl. The one on the right shows a too low float level. In this case the float pivot was sticking. You need to clean everything in here so there is no crap in here. Open up EVERYTHING in here and clean it.

Hope this helps! :cheers: Just take your time and it is not too hard to do. Just remember your will need to synch your carbs once you put them back in.
 
Well done Buster. I don't bother with the throttle cables. I remove the carb ends of the cables from the junction box under the left steering cover. If you want to remove the cables from the carbs, it's much easier after you break them into pairs. You might as well get the cable lub and clean the cables up. Motion Pro has a pretty slick tool for that.

WOW!!! A picture's worth a thousand words, these are really helpful. Again I appreciate the help and advice from you both. It's time to bring this thing back to life.
