Looking to add a shift light and possibly a small tach next to my speedo.

For sure a shift light. I don't really see that much of a need for a tach if I have the shift light really.

Something that will bolt on to a completely stock ignition and then to an upgraded ignition.

With that said, what ignition systems are you guys running, how good improvement, cost vs bang for buck etc.

Thanks
Todd

Love this shift light!! It doubles as a tach too because each light can be set up to 1000 rpm. Mine comes on at 3k (1st light) 4k (2nd) 5k (3rd) 6k(4th) 7k(both yellow ones) 8k (red one) 9k ( all flash rapidly) F-ing love it! Also tell u battery good before u start it, after u start has a alternator test, also while riding it has a overvoltage warning or an undervoltage warning.. for 140$ can beat it!

This is what I went with

http://vmaxforum.net/showthread.php?t=23587

It's about the same price as the ecliptech but shows actual RPM, with LEDs around the display lighting up at the shift point.

It's three wires directly tap into the three wires going to the stock tach. Couldn't be simpler. Set the pulse-per-revolution to 1 and you're set.

Most people run the stock ignition. Until recently the only alternative was a Dyna 3000(which are now extremely rare for 85-89), which gave a choice of a few ignition curves and a rev limiter. Recently member dingy has made a plug-n-play kit out of an Ignitech unit that lets you play with anything you want. It can hook up to a PC for programming. It was designed primarily for Ventures but can easily be programmed to control the v-boost servo as well.

I like that! is it water proof?? i just dont like how it hangs off.. No need to know exact RPM in my eyes while actually riding.. But sweet set up!

I'm pretty much a minimalist. I'm using a harlan, its been working flawlessly. However, it seems like he's dropped off the face of the earth, as no one has been able to get a hold of him. The next thing close to this shift light would be the Raptor. You can find them pretty easily if you google it.

My old setup was a 5" sunpro tach with a shiftlight.

I attacked it the other way around. Got a Ignitech TCI unit for about $250.
It has a shift light connector, so you can use pretty much any light you can mount up and use it as a shift light.

just make sure it can do 2 cylinders. and even if it can't u might be able to work it at 4 cylinders but 1/2 redline i think?

This is my setup:

Like KJ's it is a Harlan, and I have had it for years and it has worked great for me. The mount is made by Tom at Cycle One-Off, it is a quality piece designed to hold a Raptor shift light. Tom sells the Raptor with many different light color choices and mounts for different locations. Check it out here: http://www.cycleoneoff.com/CBR.html

The Ignitech TCI I sell has two outputs that either one alone can trigger a light or other powered device at specified rpm settings.

The one light can be programed to turn off at a specified launch rpm (100 rpm increments) Then same light can be set to come back on at a specified shift rpm (100 rpm increments).

Picture of setup screen for this function attached. I set it to be off until 4,000 rpm, then light between 4,000 & 4,200 rpm, off again until 9,000 rpm then lit above 9,000 rpm in sample settings in picture.

Sunpro with shift light.
Like large size; easy to read tach.
Don't have to take my eyes off the road to see shift light come on.

This may not help, But i just install the koso gauge RX1N, It has 2 shift light settings. I can set a yellow shft light to come on at 9000 rpms and the red light shift come at 10500 rpms. I cool setup.

This is a video on youtube the rpms match the vmax rpms...

Would love to here more about the KOSO setup. Does the install really look like it belongs? Certainly is a great idea for the vmax. How difficult was it to install?

Just installed an ecliptech today. Works great. Set it up for 3000 low and 9000 high. As you approach 9000, it's not the time to be looking down at the OEM tach. Ecliptech solves that problem, not that I'm at 9000 often, but it's nice info to have.
