I'm trying to get my carbs out so I can give them a good chem dip. I found that the screws on the top are stripped out and my channel locks can't get them out because of the way they're positioned. How the heck am i supposed to get these dang things out?

they are the ones on the top, I got the bottom ones out already. I have a ton of numbered baggies waiting for parts to go in them and a 1 gallon can of barrymans carb dip waiting for these nasty ass carbs to go in them.

top screws? wh/ones? vice grips work well usually?

I have used a dremel with a narrow cutting wheel to grind a slot for a flat screwdriver, clamp the vise grips on the screwdriver shaft and use your other hand to press down on the handle.
If you have the room that will usually work.

What top screws are you removing to get the carbs out of the bike? There are none...

Just release the clamps on the intake boots and pull them all out as one. Once you get them out you can worry about the screws. I Vice-Grip is your best bet IMO but an impact screwdriver and some screw head healer works as well.

Guess I should have ask hime that .LOL I just assumed he was trying to get the big phillips screws loose.

yeah that's what i meant. When i said top ones i meant the ones at the top of the picture. So i can just loosen the boots, pull them out, and then disconnect the linkages after that?

There are no screws in your picture to remove in order to take the carb rack out of the bike.

Like I said and Sean reiterated... Loosen the screws on the boots and pull the whole rack out. They'll come out hard but WILL come out.

That is correct, unplug the fuel pump connector, disconnect the fuel line, remove the throttle cables from the junction box under the left scoop & mounting panel, loosen the boot clamps and pull the rack off.

I use a DeWalt 18V cordless with the proper size phillips bit for the screws you're referring to...then replace them with s/s allen head bolts.

ok i got them out and alot of stuff off of them. My next question is, how to i go about taking off the choke linkages? That little plate on the top ( top most part of the first picture) is still on there, i can't get a good grip on them with the clamps and they are completely f-ed up.

Unhook the small "C" clips on the inboard side of the levers. Same with the center linkage bar except it will also have a white plastic washer under the clip you need to watch for.

thanks guys, your very helpful. I got one carb completely free. I just need to find my dremmel and cut slits into those stripped screws so i can get them out. So far the first carm out is looking surprisingly clean. Down side is... all the diaphragms are stuck. What's the best way to free up those things? I can't use my finger to push them at all. They are all in amazing shape and I don't want to ruin them

....and as for possible carb cleaning/rebuilding questions that may be coming up......

If you haven't visited the "Carb" section of this forum there are some excellent write-ups from some of the guys detailing carb cleaning and rebuilding.....a MUST read for sure!!

You might want to replace your hoses as well, looks the "T" hose that feeds #3 & 4 carb is cracked.

Do NOT dip your carbs into a chem bath until you have removed ALL rubber parts or you will ruin them.

You should also download the Yamaha Service Manual from www.vmaxoutlaw.com, it gives you the right order for the steps needed to work on carbs.

For the choke linkages you simply unscrew the four little screws that clamp the choke levers to the linkage, remove the screw next to the choke lever, then pull out the whole linkage taking great care in remembering which lever goes where and where all the little plastic washers go.
